What is the Mission Trip To Your Life?

We take trips all over the world to serve those in need and draw closer to God. People return from mission trips energized, excited and transformed. We want to recognize that God has sent us everywhere in our lives and he is doing something wherever we go. This means we don’t have to go anywhere special to hear from God and join him in what he’s doing. There are many things that make a mission trip powerful and we want to take pieces of that and put it into our normal life. Students, leaders and anyone who wants to will take one week of their normal life and give it to God as an offering. This is an experiment to see what we learn and how we are changed by trying to take a mission trip to our lives.

Instead of serving at a soup kitchen you could sit by someone that everyone has left out at lunchtime. Instead of sorting clothes for the homeless you could stay after to help a teacher or a family member set something up. Instead of listening to the stories of those on the street in another city you could take the time to really listen to other people in your life. Instead of looking at the people who hurting on the outside you could look around your classroom or around the mall or wherever and pray for those who are hurting on the inside.

Next Sunday Night Jan. 28th during M2/3D (6-8) we will have a special time of praying for each other and preparing for the mission trip to your life.

Saturday Feb. 3rd from 10 AM-1:00 PM we will have a pancake breakfast to close the mission trip to your life together and reflect on it. We will not have any meetings on the Sunday Feb. 4th (enjoy the super bowl with family and friends).

Things we all will do that week:

Reading the Bible and praying daily:
There will be a devotional given out so that everyone will be reading the same scriptures and praying in the same direction each day.

Staying Connected:
This will be the most different part from a normal mission trip but we want to be in this together. We all will make a commitment to stay connected each day by calling each other, checking in or communicating somehow (e-mail, text messaging, etc..).

Challenges:

Each day there will be a different challenge of listening to God or joining him in loving the world around us.

Reflection:
One important part of any mission trip is to take the time to reflect daily on where you saw God, where he used you, what you learned and where you missed out. We also will have a blog that we would like as many people to type out their reflections each day on a special blog created for this event.

Create one other thing:
We would like everyone to create or discover one other thing to do this week to give this week to God. Different ideas are listed below to get you started. You are free to go crazy and incorporate as many ideas as you want.

Check out the next post with other ideas for the trip!

Let's Brainstorm!

The goal is brainstorm, pray and discuss different ways of “taking your everyday life” and giving it up to God as an offering. What would give glory to God? What would help you to remember that he is with you? What would help you join him in loving the world?

Redecorate your spaces:
Your room, locker, myspace, computer background, cellphone, etc…
Put up new pictures, the verse for the week, stuff that will remind you to pray, etc.., Stuff that people might see and then ask you about, etc…

Write your own prayers:
Write prayers for different parts of life like when you turn on the computer, when you first get up, or when you are in the halls at school or whatever.

Put on your God Lens:
During the mission trip to your life you could take the time to think about what God’s view is on the things you are reading in school, the movies or shows you are watching, the music you listen to or other things you are taking in. God might be showing himself to you through these things or some of them may be things that are taking away from God speaking to you.

Special Prayer Time:
What if you took the first 5 minutes of every lunch and found a place to pray for your friends and school? What if you and a few other people showed up at school early one day to pray or during lunch or before practice? Go through a bunch of pictures at home and pray for anyone you see in the pictures.

Encourage and Help People
What if you encouraged a teacher, a friend, someone you don’t know well, somebody new, somebody nobody likes, a neighbor, a family member, a team member, a youth leader, etc…? You could write notes, a phone call, send e-mails, text messages, posts but usually the best is in person.

Take some time to pray and think about somebody God may want you to help or bless like the people listed above.

Connect:
What are some ways you could stay connected to others? Every night you could talk to a few people and maybe a leader about how the day went. You could plan one night out of the week where a bunch of you get together to hang out and talk about how it’s going and to pray for the next few days.

Focused Time With God:
Besides reading the devotional you could read other parts of the bible and ask God what to change you by his scriptures. Read part of the gospels and be changed by how Jesus lived and ask God to send you into your world the way he sent his son Jesus. Set apart time to turn on a worship CD or something and just listen to it and worship God. Take a walk and listen to what God might be saying to you and allow him to fill you with his peace.

Throw A Party:
You could have a bunch of your friends over to your house to hang out and have fun. To close the party or in the middle of it you could share with them how much you care about them and that you want to share with them what God has been doing in your life lately.

What ideas do you have?
Please make a comment below about any ideas you have? Maybe take some of the ideas listed and keep dreaming.
